HARWICH REGATTA CHALLENGE CUP

This splendid cup is the Harwich Regatta Challenge Cup, which was presented in 1908 by H.G. Hepworth, esq. (formerly the gents outfitters) for a Motor Boat Race in Harwich.

The ā€˜J’ Class yachts were sailed and raced in this area, but were too deep draft to come alongside a jetty – hence the newly built motor boats ferried the owner and crew to the shore. This became an idea for a Motor Boat Race, and these launches were entered into a race. H.G. Hepworth provided the trophy, and the 1st winner was St. Thomas Lipton in 1908.

The racing continued on and off until 1933 – resurrected in 1998 with predicted logs, and ran until the year 2000.
